My Life

#ProtectTransKids

Honestly, protect ALL our kids, but the trans kids are the ones that really need support right now.

This year, all sorts of new bills for anti-LGBT legislation are flying around. One state literally made it child abuse to support your transgender child. How is this okay? Personally, I believe that’s a bit backwards. It should be child abuse to NOT support your transgender child.

Another state banned all trans women from competing in sports.

Another one yet has banned all education on LGBT issues in schools.

How is this okay?

My son goes to a smaller school, but his counselors and advisors believe there is probably at least 15% of the student population that is LGBTQ+ in some way. Many of these children are not supported at home. The school counselor asked me if I would be interested in leading a support group for parents of the kids.

I’m not sure I can do it.

How can I look at a parent who doesn’t accept their child, without grabbing them by the shoulders, shaking them, and screaming, “WTF is wrong with you!”

I don’t get it. Why are we hurting these kids?

I’ve heard all the excuses.

“I just don’t understand it.” News flash, I don’t either. I will NEVER understand how painful it is for my son to be stuck in a body that he shouldn’t be. I will never understand how it feels to be a constant target for bullying and hate. I don’t have to understand it to accept it. I don’t have to understand it to not be an asshole.

“My religion says it’s wrong.” Almost everything is wrong in the eyes of some religions. Seriously, if this is your excuse, please take a good look at your life and reevaluate, because I am almost certain that you are doing something that your religion says is wrong.

I shouldn’t need to point out that the suicide rate is higher for the LGBTQ+ community in general, and even higher when they are not supported.

I shouldn’t need to point out that I don’t care what my child identifies as as long as he is around to identify as someone!
